This placement would suit... someone who enjoys the great outdoors and is thinking of working with children in the future. Every year college students take part in adventurous activities in and around Victoria state. Activities include camping, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, abseiling, surfing, mountain climbing and a lot more. Changing Worlds volunteers will support the outdoor education department in the preparation of outdoor education trips for the students. You will be only expected to do what you feel you want to do. Outdoor duties will also include cooking and student mentoring. When not on the adventure camps you will be expected to support the staff at the College. You will live with a member of staff. Changing Worlds are also currently looking at sending volunteers to work on 'The Sound Of The Airwaves' project in the outback of Australia. This is a tough assignment for English speaking volunteers who will need to possess good team skills, excellent communication skills and a huge amount of creativity. Very young children in the outback do not go to school on a daily basis - the distances are simply too great! As a result 'The Sound Of The Airwaves' programme has been designed to help parents educate their children through distance learning. The children (less than 5 years old) tune in every day for an hour or two to listen to the guidance of their tutor...and this is where you can come in. Do not expect to be on the airwaves daily. There would be a lot of preparation involved, creating teaching and play resources, gathering feedback, talking with colleagues for ideas. Your spoken English would need to be clear and concise, methodical and reassuring and fun too. There will be the opportunity to work in the micro schools set up around the region where teaching to the younger children is done face to face on a rolling programme - so a chance to see more of this fascinating part of the World! Where are the placements? Our teaching placements are at Mowbray College in Melbourne. This independent co-educational non-denominational day school is located just outside of the city limits with easy access to the city centre. The College is a member of the International Round Square organisation, a group of around 40 schools worldwide who share a commitment to personal development and responsibility through service, challenge, adventure and international understanding.Volunteers on the ‘Sound of the Airwaves’ project would live and work mainly in Mount Isa in Western Queensland. You would live with a local family. What will I do? The college is flexible and tries to ensure your needs are met as well as the needs of their students. You could be involved in teaching outdoor education, French, physical education, special needs, art, computers, music and administration - basically anything! It is likely you will assist teachers in outdoor education, and go on camps to places such as the Murray River or Wangaratta. You may also help with general maintenance around the school and help in upkeep of equipment. You will earn around £70 pocket money per week for your duties. Where will I live?
You will live at either a student or a teacher’s house; these are quite close to the school but can be up to an hour away. The school does provide a free bus service for those students living some distance away. What support do I get? Changing Worlds employs the part time services of a representative who acts on our behalf in Melbourne. You will be met at Melbourne airport on arrival in Australia and will be escorted to the school. You will enjoy a typically warm Aussie welcome from your new school friends. What do I need? You need to hold a working holiday visa for Australia (cost around £90). To gain the visa you must show evidence that you have substantial funds in your bank account on arrival to Australia - at present this is around £2 000. You must arrange adequate travel insurance for your entire time overseas. Am I eligible? You need to be aged between 18 and 30 to gain a working holiday visa for Australia. What can I do in my free time? You can easily go into the beautiful city of Melbourne to experience Aussie city life and all that this includes - clubs, restaurants and theatres, parks and shops. Or you can take a trip to tourist attractions such as Phillip Island to see the penguins or along the Great Ocean Road. The Australian Alps are not too far away, and there are some lovely beaches nearby as well. Of course you must visit the set of Neighbours too! When are the departures? You can depart from the UK at any time bearing in mind the long college holidays start in early December. The college resumes in early February
