This placement would suit... Volunteers wishing to experience a genuine Thai experience whilst supporting local teachers and children.

The teachers and children at WatLamkang School always appreciate help with English teaching and other subjects and are very supportive of international volunteers. Traditional Thai teachers love sharing their knowledge of their customs and culture so you will become as integrated as possible within the school.

Location:

Watlamkang School is in Tambon Maerla district in the Singburi Province approximately 150kms north of Bangkok. The school is 11kms from Singburi city, which is reached in approximately 15 – 20 minutes by public transport.

In Singburi City, you’ll find the Wat Sawang Arom Temple, which is a centre for Buddha image sculpture. A collection of 300 Nang Yai or shadow play figures at this temple is considered the most complete in Thailand. Close to the school and your accommodation, you’ll find a hospital, shops, a post office and an Internet café.

Project Life:

After arriving in Bangkok (where you’ll be met by a local coordinator of our host organisation) you’ll travel to Singburi to meet other international volunteers who have arrived for the one-week induction. During the induction you’ll learn all you need to know about living in Thailand, including Thai language, cultural do’s and don’ts, the public transport system, Thai cooking, how to barter at markets and of course you’ll receive a full briefing on your volunteer project. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit local sights of interest. Accommodation is provided in simple dormitory-style rooms and all meals are provided.

Following your induction, you’ll take public transport to Tambon Maerla where you’ll meet Ms. Saovaporn Wangklumklang who is the teacher responsible for looking after international volunteers. She will be your ‘host mother’ since you’ll also live in her house, which is just a few hundred metres from the school.

Your exact teaching schedule and duties will be finalised when you have met and discussed your aspirations with the teachers and the Principal. Volunteers who have teaching experience will firstly shadow the Thai teachers and will then probably be given their own class to look after. If you have little or no teaching experience, there is still a vital role for you to play supporting the teachers and other volunteers, working with smaller groups in or out of class, or offering individual assistance to children. This is a project where independence, energy and initiative are very important – you may have to plan and teach classes without close supervision from the teachers, although they are on hand to help you whenever you need support.

Expect to work approximately 3 – 4 hours per day during the school day. There are also opportunities for you get involved with after school clubs or associations. If you have any knowledge or experience of other subjects or activities, whether creative or academic, you will have the chance to involve the children in these areas. The majority of the teachers at the school speak basic English so you can also help them to improve their skills.

School holidays are in March, April and October. During these times, other arrangements will be made for volunteers, such as helping at an English holiday camp.

In addition to volunteering, there are also opportunities to relax and join a ‘beach week’. The South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand have some of the finest beaches and weather in the world; you can enjoy a wonderful week of relaxation and fun with other volunteers. Dates & Duration below gives details of when you can join a beach week.

Accommodation & Food:

You’ll be living with Saovaporn Wangklumklang who is also a teacher. Just 500m from the school, the house is new and clean with an air-conditioned living room and western-style toilets and showers. Traditional Thai meals are provided during your stay.

Mrs. Wangklumklang’s husband is a principal at another school close by, so this is great opportunity for you to learn more about Thai teaching methods and to get ideas for your lessons.

Dates & Duration:

• Volunteers are welcome to join the induction weeks on the first Monday of every month
• The minimum programme is 5 weeks (1 week induction plus 4 weeks volunteering)
• You can extend your placement in multiples of 1 week
• Beach weeks can be added on throughout your placement. Volunteers are requested to finish their first 5 weeks’ placement before joining a beach week.
• There are school holidays during March, April and October. However, alternative activities will be arranged during these times.

Flights & Transportation:

• International flights are not included
• Please arrange your flight to arrive at Bangkok during the weekend before the induction starts. A local coordinator will meet you and take you to the induction centre.
• If you are already in Thailand, it is also possible to be met by a local coordinator in Singburi.
