This placement would suit... people hoping to become teachers and those who are not who want to do something worthwhile. The teaching placements are ideal for good English speakers who want to do something worthwhile, other than just traveling in a country. Teaching conversational English is a great way to give something back to your host community. Krakow, our base in Poland, is a real boom town which has prospered in the last couple of years due to the influx of tourists and migrant workers sending money home. Many Polish people are being recruited to work overseas and so that has lead to a resurgence in English teaching in schools. We work in primary and secondary schools but sometimes have requests to work with adult groups. If you have a preference for working with any of these age groups then do let us know when you join us. The schools and language groups we work with are not looking for people to teach English grammar, they already have teachers who are more than capable of teaching that but where they fall down is in teaching conversational English. Where you can help is teaching spoken English with these groups. It is invaluable that people learning English spend time with people who speak English well. Your role will be similar to a language assistant. We will ask you to concentrate on teaching the phonics of the language, the sounds of letters and words. Of equal importance will be spending time talking with the students. This way the students can get used to listening to and understanding spoken English. If you are interested in music, take some of your favourite music with you and teach the students the meaning of some of the lyrics (unless it's Eminem or Marilyn Manson)! Music is a great teaching tool. You can use it for teaching students about phonetics in basic English lessons and you can introduce understanding the meaning of the songs with more advanced students. It also makes a great change from learning and chanting from a black board! Note all projects working with children require a background check. This is an extra cost of about £10 but we will make the necessary arrangements. Parking tickets, speeding fines, and some criminal convictions will not prevent you from joining us; we simply check if you have any prior convictions relating to harming children.
