This placement would suit... motivated and adventurous school leavers, students and graduates aged 18- 24 years old who want to put something back and help Thai students improve their English, whilst enjoying a total adventure experience.
The placement at a glanceAccommodation in pairs with food and allowances provided. Four-day in-county orientation followed by 2 months at your school, a month on a building project and then one month extensive travel including the amazing AV group safari. Country knowledge You will live in villages in the northern foothills, near the Burmese border. The villages are in the valley and the surrounding hills. From Ban Thaton you can see Burma - it's that close! Chiang Rai is an hour's drive away and Chiang Mai, Thailand's second city, can be reached in three hours. Mae Ai, the district town, is nearby and has a fine hospital and excellent markets. Orientation and Training Your 4-day, in-country orientation course will be run in an attractive tourist lodge at Ban Thaton on the banks of the lovely Maekok River. You will learn about local customs and culture and gain some basic Thai. Safety will also be covered and Rosie Massingham, an experienced teacher, will give you some useful ideas for teaching English. School Selection and LocationThe school is the centre of village life in the Northern Hills. The villagers with whom you will live and work are a mix of Thais, Hill Tribes and peoples of Chinese origin. Hill Tribe children have to learn their own language, Thai and also English, but few teachers can speak English and most teaching of English is written. You can help to change this by providing spoken English and give these children and their teachers the start they need in the connected world! All schools have sports grounds and volleyball courts so there will be plenty of opportunity to play sport with the children. They love music and those who can take guitars, recorders or even drums will find them welcome. Teaching You will work for 2 months as an Assistant Teacher and we will place you, where possible, in schools to enable you to teach your preferred subjects but you will certainly be asked to teach English. You will undoubtedly be in demand within the schools and will be expected to help in a wide variety of activities- especially teaching music, drama and arts. Sports coaching and PE are also particularly in demand. Thailand groups will depart from the UK in January, May and October. Building ProjectAfter 2 months in the villages, you join the end of term celebrations and change jobs! There will be 4 weeks of building projects awaiting your attention, in the same area, prior to having adventures further afield. Adventure, Travel and Safari After your building project we will bus and boat you to the small, coral fringed island of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Siam. There, on white, white sand, fringed with lush jungle on one side and wonderfully clear seas on the other, you will enjoy a five-day diving course run by a professional company or, if you prefer, some kayaking and snorkelling to see, and perhaps help to preserve, the fantastic coral around the island. You can lie around on the beaches of Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, or you can visit one of the neighbouring countries. How about crossing into Laos, visiting the ancient capital of Luang Prabhang before floating down the great Maekong River into Cambodia and seeing the fabled Angkor Wat? Vietnam would only then be a breath away. Or you could wend your way down the Malayan Peninsula, visit Singapore and cross over to East Malaysia? There are currently a number of low cost airlines operating in the area and some fares are really cheap. Finally you return to fabulous Bangkok for your flight home. SecurityMany AVs have walked this path before you. The safety and security of our volunteers is our utmost concern. We provide a comprehensive medical and general travel policy arranged by Endsleigh Insurance, including 24 hour medical cover and air repatriation and in-country medical back up. Apply below for free brochure. There is no application fee. Thailand groups will depart from the UK in January, May and October. Please note that for 2007 / 2008 the scheme will be for 4 months - 3 months teaching in northern Thailand and one month of travel and adventure.
