This placement would suit... those with a keen interest in working with disadvantaged children in a stressful working environment.

Volunteers will be helping with the daily routine of the orphanage - at meals, bed times, and providing simple English classes as well as initiating more practical activities for the older orphans. If you enjoy art or music then these skills will be well received. To succeed you need to be open minded, patient, warm hearted as well as highly energetic.

The school placement offers the opportunity to teach primary and secondary kids who come from a poor rural background. They gain little support from their families but are extremely keen to learn. You can help teach English and other subjects.

In both cases the institutes are well managed and the children are cared for by the hardworking staff. They lack resources so take lots of teaching aids with you.

You can combine both these placements. The locals are not used to outsiders so you will be very much welcomed on arrival and will settle in quickly to your new routines.

Where?

Our placements are around the medieval city of Sibiu that is located in the centre of Romania. Sibiu, in the heart of Transylvania, is a region festooned in history and culture. The influences of the German Saxons in the surrounding lands of the city are still there - so much so that German is still spoken in some villages today!

We have orphanage placements in Tornu Rosu a typical rural village some 25 kilometers from Sibiu. Here volunteers would support the children and young adults as carers.

We have teaching placements in Slimnic a village North of Sibiu in the ‘Saxonlands’.

Accommodation

Changing Worlds can accommodate you in an apartment in Sibiu. You may prefer to stay with a local family in the city. The choice is yours!

You will need to budget for food during your placement.

However both the school and orphanage will feed you meals whilst you are at work so you need to fend for yourself during weekends and holidays. Food is cheap in Romania so £10 a day on these days off is more than adequate.

Free time

You are spoiled for choice!

Sibiu was the European Capital of Culture for 2007 and this will come as no surprise to visitors as there is so much to do and see in the city itself. There are fantastic (and cheap) restaurants serving both international and local cuisine. There are numerous night clubs where you will meet the locals enjoying a night out.

Away from the night life there is plenty to explore including museums, churches and city walls. The city has a quaint and relaxed feel about it with mediavel backstreets and alleyways. The city has experienced considerable political upheaval and this is reflected in the types of historical architecture found in the unlikeliest of places.

There are plenty of shops that sell most things you will need. Clothes and shoe shops abound!

Access to the areas surrounding Sibiu are easy to reach with good road and rail connections.

One hour South of Sibiu is Paltinis that is a mountain retreat for skiing and tobagganing. A great place to stay during weekends when you need to relax and enjoy some well deserved time off!

To the North of Sibiu is the Germanic region of Saxonlands with their individual designed and unique fortified churches.Further away are the Carpathian Mountains, the historic centre of Brasov and Dracula's castle...after all you are in the centre of Transylvania!

Bucharest the capital is about five hours drive away from Sibiu on the highway.

Support

On arrival to Sibiu you will be met by the Changing Worlds representative, Laura Bothar. Laura is a young graduate who has excellent spoken English. Laura will provide you with an sightseeing trip of her home city, teach you a few simple phrases in Romanian and point out the best bars and cafes!

Laura will provide on-going support throughout your stay.

Cost

Cost is £2 343 for three months. £330 for each additional month to a maximum of six months.
